Everest in then Alps

EiA 2023 HAS KICKED OFF!

It’s finally here! Everest in the Alps 2023… the teams will be flying out to Verbier this weekend ready to start our 6th ascent at first light on Tuesday. Kit is being packed, with as many snacks and blister plasters as they can fit!

Make sure you follow along on Instagram and Facebook to cheer the teams on!

We are super excited to have partnered with Currensea to bring you the first ever EiA debit card, powered by MasterCard, to save you bank charges while you are away. It’s open to everyone and you can choose to donate as much of those savings as you want to the Brain Tumour Charity. It’s free to order and it really does have killer FX rates!

We have two from the ‘meet the team member’ series for you this month as well as a brilliant piece from our partner Precision Fuel and Hydration on how to stay hydrated during a winter endurance challenge like EiA.

Lastly, we have an update from the Brain Tumour Charity, looking at what has been achieved at the Everest Centre in the last five years as a direct result of the funds raised on this challenge and what they hope to achieve in the next five years. It really is incredible.

AN EASIER WAY TO DONATE TO A CAUSE YOU CARE ABOUT

POWERED BY CURRENSEA AND MASTERCARD

We’re so excited to announce the launch of the EIA debit card – and keen to tell you all about the rewards it can reap, particularly when travelling abroad:

  • Free to apply and better FX rates than Starling / Revolut etc (comparisons here)
  • Links directly to your existing current account so no need to transfer/exchange funds whilst travelling
  • Automatically sends some or all of the savings you make on bank charges to The Brain Tumour Charity (which you can dial up, down or off at anytime)

Can even be used in the UK to ‘round-up’ transactions by a few pennies or to the nearest £

MEET THE TEAM MEMBER: MONICA KHANNA

WHO ARE YOU?

My name is Monica Khanna, I am a last-minute addition to the team Team Helios following an invite from Nishani (long term friend from school and medical school). I am mother to two teenagers (aged 18 and 16), wife to an orthopaedic orophile and work as a Consultant musculoskeletal Radiologist in London.

WHAT’S YOUR INSPIRATION FOR TAKING ON SUCH AN EPIC CHALLENGE?

Learning to snow tour for the first time and pushing myself to new physical and mental limits. I aim to develop the discipline to train and prepare for such a challenge. Encouraging my children to similarly accept and conquer different challenges that may come their way in the future. Supporting Place2be, which help and equip children with skills to cope with their own mental health challenges that may arise not only at school now but in the future.

HOW TO STAY FUELLED AND HYDRATED…

By Precision Fuel and Hydration

Eating and drinking properly will be crucial if you want to perform at your best during any winter endurance challenge like Everest In The Alps, so our friends at Precision Fuel & Hydration have put together some advice to help you start and stay properly hydrated and fuelled during the event…

WHAT HYDRATION CHALLENGES WILL YOU FACE?

Whilst we often think of hydration as being more important in the summer, there are a couple of key factors that increase your fluid losses in the cold that you might not be aware of…

SCIENTISTS JOIN FORCES TO TRANSFORM TREATMENTS FOR CHILDHOOD BRAIN TUMOURS

Experts at The Everest Centre are delivering a cutting-edge program of scientific research to develop pioneering new treatments for children diagnosed with low-grade brain tumours, following major new funding from The Brain Tumour Charity.

We are excited to announce we will be funding a further £5 million for the next five years of research. This follows the achievements since 2017, when The Everest Centre was established.

The Everest Centre is a collaborative research centre that brings together world-leading experts from Germany (the Hopp Children’s Cancer Center (KiTZ) and German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ) in Heidelberg and Charité University Hospital in Berlin) and the UK (University College London and Queen Mary University of London).

The research focuses on low-grade glioma brain tumours that affect children. And aims to further understand, diagnose and find new treatments for these tumours.

My son Toby has a brain tumour which has hugely impacted his life.  His diagnosis when he was five, followed by turbulent years of hospitalisation, long form chemotherapy and dangerous invasive surgeries, was more than any child should have to face.

The subsequent impact of the tumour, and these blunt treatments, means that he is still living with his diagnosis every day. He is one of thousands of children battling this condition and outcome.

So please visit my JustGiving page. I am raising funds for the Brain Tumour Charity, and specifically The Everest Centre for Research into Paediatric Low Grade Brain Tumours, which we founded with the charity in 2017.

See you in the Alps!
