Tulip Mania is the world's first recorded speculative bubble. Dutch merchants traded tulip contracts like financial instruments. Individual bulbs changed hands for the price of a skilled craftsman's annual salary. Then, in February 1637, the market collapsed in a single week. Nothing has been the same since — except the tulips, which are still worth every penny.
What the Dutch knew, and what we still know, is that there is something extraordinary about the tulip. Its colours are saturated and true. Its stem, so clean and straight, has the quality of something designed rather than grown. And it does something no other flower does: it continues to grow in the vase, often by an inch or more, long after cutting.
Red is a declaration.
Purple is royalty and deep respect.
White is forgiveness and fresh starts.
Yellow is cheerful, uncomplicated love. Spring only — when they're here, they're at their finest.
