Eucalyptus is not a flower — and that is precisely the point. It is the structure, the breath, the negative space that makes everything around it come alive. Flowers placed next to eucalyptus suddenly look more considered, more generous, more intentional. It is the difference between a bouquet and a composition.
Over 700 species grow wild in Australia. Clinical research has found that its scent measurably reduces cortisol — the stress hormone. A room with fresh eucalyptus in it is, in some scientifically measurable sense, a calmer room. Which is a remarkable thing for a plant to be able to do.
And then there is this: eucalyptus is one of very few cut flowers that becomes more interesting as it dries. The silver-grey deepens. The scent, which starts clean and camphor-bright, becomes warmer and more resinous over weeks. Most flowers die; eucalyptus evolves. An arrangement with eucalyptus can look extraordinary in a home for a month or more.
If you are choosing flowers for someone who moves through the world with intention — who notices the quality of things — add eucalyptus. They will notice.
