There is no flower in the world that does what a daffodil does. It pushes through frozen ground, sometimes through snow, and simply insists that spring is coming. Not as a question. As a fact. And it is right, every single time.
In Wales, there is a tradition that if you spot the very first daffodil of the season, the next twelve months will be filled with wealth. The Chinese believe that forcing daffodil bulbs to bloom at New Year fills the home with good fortune. In England they are called the Lent Lily, and they have marked the turn from winter to warmth for as long as anyone can remember.
One thing worth knowing: always present daffodils in a bunch, never as a single stem. The old legend says a solitary daffodil foretells misfortune, while a whole bunch guarantees happiness. Fortunately, they look far better in abundance anyway — a great armful of yellow, all those little golden trumpets, is one of the most joyful things you can put in a room.
They are the March birth flower. They are the 10th anniversary flower. They are the right flower when someone needs to be reminded that better things are coming.
